More than 1.5m people have already renewed their tax credits, with many choosing to go online, despite there still being four weeks left until the 31 July deadline

Around 500,000 of these people have chosen to renew their tax credits online. Approximately 750,000 renewed using the online service in the whole of last year’s tax credits renewal period.

HMRC has ensured a team is available to support more vulnerable customers who are unable to go online and the customer support teams contact the people they know need special support.

People are now able to report any changes to their circumstances through the new HMRC app, further growing HMRC’s online presence.

Nick Lodge, HMRC’s director general, benefits and credits, said: ‘We are delighted that many people are choosing to renew online. The online service means that people can renew at any time of the day or night, without having to call us.

‘Online help is there to support people and our webchat facility can also answer most queries they may have.’

By 31 July a total of 3.1m people will have to renew their tax credits.

Information on renewing tax credits is here.
