The owner of Café Jinnah, Saleem Ahktar, was accused by HMRC of inflating sales figures to claim a total of £103,351 over a 13-day period in August 2020. HMRC initially paid out the full amount, but on review tried to reclaim £74,366.30 of this, reduced by £10,000 to £63,766.30.

The First Tier Tribunal (FTT) found the appellant and its tax agent, T Nawaz & Co, presented sufficient evidence for the full amount of £103,351. Taher Nawaz was representing the appellant.

Ahktar and his family have been in business since 1981, and are well known in the area, hence why the amount of money that went through the tills in 13 days amounted to such a high amount.
