£12.9m tax bill for King Charles III

In a ‘commitment to transparency’, Royal Household publishes annual finances showing King Charles has paid £30m in tax since taking to the throne

King Charles III has become the first monarch to reveal their tax bill, showing he paid £12.9m in tax for 2024-25.

Included in the Royal annual financial statement, known as the sovereign grant report, the Royal Household confirmed the amount of tax payable by the King since accession in 2023 is ‘more than £30m’.

The only details of the tax returns came in one line of the report, which stated: ‘In the two full tax years since becoming King, His Majesty’s tax bill was £11.7m in 2023-24 and £12.9m in 2024-25 respectively.’

The tax payable for 2025-26 was said to be ‘not yet available as the underlying figures are subject to audit and review.’

The income on which the King owed the tax was also not revealed.
