PwC faces second investigation into £5m Evergrande audit

The Hong Kong audit regulator has opened a second investigation into Big Four auditor PwC over its handling of the £5.4m audit of troubled real estate giant Evergrande Group

The huge Chinese property developer has significant financial problems with debts of more than $300bn (£244bn) and faces a liquidation threat to the Hong Kong part of the business. Thousands of apartment buyers who invested in Evergrande properties in China face an uncertain future as their properties remain unfinished.

PwC was auditor of the group for more than a decade until January 2023 when the firm resigned the audit contract after disagreements with Evergrande related to the unreleased 2021 financial accounts.
