Rise in lower socio-economic background accountants

The accountancy sector saw a 1% increase in applicants from lower socio-economic backgrounds at firms going from 74% in 2018-19 to 75% last year

The report from the charity Access Accountancy found that 17% of applicants were eligible for either income support or free school meals and 41% had parents without university degrees. These figures remained the same in both reported years.

The data collected comes from the Big Four accountancy firms as well as BDO and Grant Thornton.

Regarding gender, the report found that over half, 55% were male, 45% female, and 0.1% transgender and non-binary identities. With race, 29% of applicants identified as Asian, 10% as Chinese, 8% black, 5% mixed/other, and 1% Arab.
