The 152-year-old club was taken to court by HMRC and is now being liquidated over outstanding debts to HMRC.
The Salford Red Devils are the fourth English rugby team to collapse since 2022 as the Greater Manchester club follow Wasps, London Irish, and Worcester Warriors in falling foul of financial problems.
The club’s operating company, Salford City Reds (2013) Limited, were issued a winding-up petition in May. The petition was adjourned four times, with the company promising to find funds through a bridging loan.
After the fourth adjournment, with no money materialising, HMRC went to court with a winding up petition against the operating company, ordering it to be liquidated. In May 2025, it was reported that they owed over £500,000 to HMRC, according to SunSport.
