Is A Single European VAT Rate Viable?

When the EC asked for views on flatlining the VAT rate across Europe, it opened a can of worms, reports Rachel Fielding

When the European Commission launched its Green Paper on the future of VAT at the back end of 2010, its objective was ‘to trigger and encourage public debate on the future of the EU VAT system’. By the time the consultation period had closed at the end of May, amid the sovereign debt crisis gripping the eurozone, the Commission had received more than 2,000 submissions from across the EU.
