Spanish tax changes: what you need to know

A raft of tax changes is due to come into effect before the end of the year in Spain including a wealth tax, increases to income tax and property tax revisions. Claudio Rodríguez Vera, international tax barrister at Del Canto Chambers unpicks the plans and considers visa options

The latest development in the Covid-19 recovery to come from the Spanish government is the recent announcement to increase certain taxes. These new taxes will be on personal income, wealth and inheritance gifts, to ensure a fair tax system across the board. The plan is known as ‘tax harmonisation’. These tax rises will allow Spain to receive subsidies of €69.5bn (£58bn) from the EU in a bid to kick start economies after the overwhelming impact of the pandemic.

Prime minister Pedro Sánchez insists that tax harmonisation is necessary for the nation’s economic recovery, but these new tax pressures are causing rising concern among UK expats who fear it will negatively impact their financial situation.
