Tax agent fined £16k for money laundering breaches

The court has dismissed the appeal from a tax agent against a £16,891 penalty for multiple breaches of money laundering regulations

The First Tier Tribunal (FTT) has dismissed the appeal from Delta Tax Agents against a penalty of £16,891 for non-compliance with anti-money laundering regulations issued by HMRC.

Delta Tax Agents predominantly prepared and submitted tax returns. In 2015 HMRC wrote to Delta setting out that it had identified failures in complying with the Money Laundering Regulations 2007.

HMRC told Delta that it had to make changes to its compliance with the regulations which involved including primary and secondary identification for all clients with procedures to check this, introducing procedures for risk-based record-keeping, and procedures to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing.
