Top 10 tips for filing year-end accounts – part 2

The filing deadline for private companies with a December year end and public companies with a March year end is 30 September. Michelle Roberts ACA, senior technical writer, audit & accounting, at Croner-I provides essential advice on how to file FRS 102 year-end accounts to avoid unwanted penalties

1.Know the filing deadlines

In general, company accounts need to be filed:

  • with Registrar of Companies within nine months from end of accounting period, ie, for 31 December 2018 year ends by 30 September 2019; and
  • with HMRC along with the company's tax return (if required) not more than 12 months following the end of the year to which they relate.

For public companies, accounts need to be filed within six months.

2. Understand the implications of not filing in time

Companies submitting their accounts after the filing deadline has passed will incur a late filing penalty of at least £150 (rising to at least £750 for a public company). The penalty increases in line with the period of late submission.
