Watkins: what happens to VAT in an independent Scotland?

John Watkins, senior partner at Dickson Middleton, argues that taking a simple balance sheet view of an independent Scotland misses the complexity. Here he considers the potential complexity of a new VAT system

From what I have heard on the independence debate so far, detailed considerations of business issues have taken a distant back seat to welfare and healthcare considerations, as important as these issues are in any society. However, the ability of society to fund those issues is very much dependent on what business can generate in tax revenues.

Let us consider for one moment the impact of independence on one tax, VAT, and what that would mean to Scottish businesses after independence.

Scottish VAT will be different to the rest of UK (rUK) VAT, just as Danish VAT is different to German VAT.
