You don’t need a Big Four budget to compete on AI

For mid-market accountancy firms, the debate is no longer whether AI matters, it's knowing how to turn ambition into action, says Jim Hinchliffe ACA, commercial director at Kaplan

Over the past year, I’ve spoken to dozens of accountancy firms that recognise AI has the potential to transform how they operate. Many have already invested in tools such as Microsoft Copilot or are exploring how generative AI could support audit, tax and advisory work. They know the technology is moving quickly and they don’t want to be left behind.

Yet there is often a disconnect between recognising the opportunity and knowing what to do next. Most firms are not short of technology, they are short of a clear plan for how to use it, and the skills to make it work.
