A couple from Lancashire have won £61,708,231 in the EuroMillions lottery, allowing the self employed accountant to retire
Richard and Debbie Nuttall were on holiday in the Canaries celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary when an email arrived from the National Lottery informing them that they had won £2.60. A few hours late another email landed from the National Lottery with some ‘exciting news about their ticket’ and telling them to get in touch.
At first Richard thought it was a scam and confirmation was delayed as the mobile phone signal was patchy in Fuerteventura so the Nuttalls had to contact their children in the UK and ask them to log on to their National Lottery account to see if they had actually won. The news came back that they were indeed winners of the multimillion pound prize.
When they finally got through to the National Lottery, they were told they had won the big draw on 3 30 January and were joint winners with another ticket holder in Spain.
Self employed management accountant Richard has run his own accountancy practice for 20 years and said he would retire before the end of the tax year this April, adding that he would try to help his clients with any urgent accounting issues as the decision to retire early had come so quickly.
He said that he would not leave any of his clients ‘in the lurch – my clients have been fantastic and loyal to me, and I will of course do their payroll if they are stuck’.
The Nuttalls, both 54, had been doing EuroMillions for eight years and now plan to buy a large house with grounds and a golf room, a holiday home in Portugal and support a charity called BK’s Heroes, where they are ambassadors. The lottery win will be lifechanging as they had been planning to downsize before the huge windfall.
The National Lottery revealed the winners of the jackpot at a media event at Mitton Hall Hotel in the Ribble Valley.
