Autumn Statement a missed opportunity for green investment

Tax measures to encourage investment in the green economy are a low priority for the Chancellor, but accountants can contribute to ESG ambitions, explains John Edwards, chief executive of the Institute of Financial Accountants

Amid global commitment of over $57bn in the first four days of COP28, to support climate initiatives, experts are commenting that the UK Autumn Statement did not prioritise green initiatives enough.

While the statement did incorporate changes to the energy infrastructure and some decarbonisation, it comes at a time when the government has been rolling back green commitments in favour of economic growth, and it fails to capitalise on the economic and commercial value of sustainability-first business thinking.
