Anyone preparing for a summer break to Mallorca, Minorca or Ibiza should factor in the new eco tax being introduced across the islands this summer, which could add around £40 to a one-week family break
The Balearics government is introducing a new daily charge of €2 (£1.50) payable by tourists over the age of 15 who stay in a hotel, holiday home, hostel or bed and breakfast, to contribute to the overall environmental upkeep and ecological sustainability of the islands and to maintain the natural heritage.
The new tax is set to come into force from 1 July 2016.
It is not the first time visitors to the Balearic islands have had an eco levy imposed. The last time such as tax was in force was 2002, when it was repealed when a new government was elected in the islands.
