As part of the CBI’s plan it is asking government to set out a long-term tax roadmap for the UK, setting out how the tax system will restore the public finances in a way that is consistent with supporting business investment, net-zero ambitions and the UK's international competitiveness. This includes reforming VAT rules for company cars and public charging to accelerate take up of zero emission vehicles.
It would also like to see the Apprenticeship Levy replaced with a ‘Learning for Life’ skills levy that ends cross-subsidy and challenges each business to spend every penny investing in the skills of their workforce.
The goal to achieve net-zero is increasingly important as the UK hosts COP26 in Glasgow later this year, stressing the importance of promoting investment in a decarbonised economy. For example, the UK could capture £8bn in additional revenues from hydrogen electrolyser production, said the CBI. At the same time technology is seen as an important tool, with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) having the potential to add £38bn to the UK economy in 2030. Overall, the CBI expects a potential boost to the economy estimated at £700bn a year by 2030.
