The Charity Commission has suspended online giving website, www.charitygiving.co.uk, a fundraising portal run by the Dove Trust after 'serious concerns' about mismanagement and risk to charity funds.
The regulator said the decision was taken in consultation with Pesh Framjee of Crowe Clark Whitehill who was appointed as interim manager of the charity last month. No accounts have been filed by the charity since the financial year ending 5 April 2009, and there is a shortfall of at least £250,000 between what was owed to charities from donations and the cash held by the Dove Trust.
Michelle Russell, head of investigations and enforcement at the Charity Commission, said: 'We have taken this action because of serious concerns about the trustees' management of the fundraising portal and the charity's financial situation.'
A statement on the fundraising website said: 'We are currently working with the Charity Commission to consider as a matter of urgency the next steps in order to protect existing funds the public has donated, and any future donations.'
Any donations made since the announcement will be returned to the donors, and the facility to create fundraising pages or receive funds has been suspended until further notice.
Interim manager Pesh Framjee, partner at Crowe Clark Whitehill, said: 'An immediate and full analysis of the charity's current financial position is being undertaken. I was appointed as interim manager on 6 June 2013, and up until this point have been acting alongside the trustees to fulfil a specified function. Going forward I am conducting a review to establish the extent of the shortfall and the donors affected. We will be working closely with the Charity Commission with the aim of ensuring that donations made reach the charities for whom they were intended.'
