Government will not reveal number of people dragged into NICs

Conservative MPs have voted down a Liberal Democrat amendment to the National Insurance Contributions Bill requiring disclosure of how many people will have to pay NICs for the first time due to fiscal drag

The Liberal Democrats had called on the government to ‘come clean’ on the number of people dragged into paying national insurance due to fiscal drag due to frozen thresholds during a debate on the National Insurance Contributions (Reduction in Rates) (2) Bill.

At the House of Commons yesterday, Lib Dem MP Alistair Carmichael proposed the amendment calling for a review of the effect of frozen thresholds.
