HMRC register for tax advisers mandatory from May

Six months to go until mandatory register for all tax advisers who ‘interact’ with HMRC becomes mandatory, but still waiting for final exemptions

Budget documents confirmed that the tax adviser interaction register will go live in May 2026, with a three-month transition period to sign up online via a new portal under development and penalties for non-compliance.

The government said it will be mandatory ‘for tax advisers who interact with HMRC on behalf of their clients to register with HMRC and meet minimum standards’.

The new register is wide-reaching, affecting anyone who interacts with HMRC at any level, which means it nets the obvious tax advisers, tax agents and accountants handling tax affairs for clients, as well as conveyancing firms advising on stamp duty land tax (SDLT) and lawyers.
