Rachel Reeves is set to be named as Chancellor of the Exchequer, the first woman ever to hold the second most important role in government.

The majority of the shadow cabinet won their seats with the exception of Jonathan Ashworth, shadow paymaster general who was beaten by independent, Shockat Adam Patel in Leicester South and Thangam Debbonaire, shadow culture secretary was beaten by Green co-party leader Carla Denyer in Bristol Central.

Turnout was down 7.4% from the 2019 election at 59.9%, while Labour secured 34% of the vote, comparable with Jeremy Corbyn’s vote share in 2017 which resulted in a resounding loss for Labour.

The Conservatives lost 248 seats in a backlash from voters after 14 years in power, winning a total of 121 seats with only four constituencies left to count at 10.00am. Their vote share was 23.7%, their lowest share since the early 1900s.
