After years of economic turmoil, the prospects for newly qualifieds are now much brighter, writes Rajan Mirpuri

Over the two years since the demise of Lehman Brothers and the subsequent economic turmoil, career opportunities for accountants have been significantly affected. While senior accounting professionals have witnessed a decline in job opportunities, it is those at the newly-qualified level that have perhaps seen the worst fall in the market.

Where previously a newly-qualified chartered accountant faced a plethora of career options, headcount reductions severely restricted this. With the latest ACA results released, here is our analysis of the opportunities in 2011 across some key business areas:
