The succession crisis facing regional
firms is here for the long term, says Calum Robson
In small and medium-sized firms across the UK, partners of a
certain age face uncertain futures. At a stage of their career when
many would ordinarily anticipate kicking off their shoes, winding
down and enjoying a comfortable, well-earned retirement, what lies
in the immediate future is a reality that contrasts starkly with what
they imagined when embarking on their ACA training contracts decades
ago. The pipeline of future partners is drying up.
Gordon Gilchrist, marketing director at 2020 Group, says: ‘The
profession’s had its wake-up call. We’re past the point
where partners are aware of the coming crisis but regard it as too
far into the future to be concerned about.’
