IS Open source software a viable substitute for off-the-shelf packages, asks Lesley Meall

When Aalco Metals wanted to streamline its service centres and integrate disparate legacy accounting and trading systems, it opted for a data integration system from Talend. When Aspiro’s online music business outgrew its business intelligence software, the multimedia company selected a replacement from Pentaho. When Fox Electronics wanted to improve its product lifecycle management and international shipping and tracking processes, it chose Aras for the job. All of these systems are based on open source software (OSS), they’re all strategic, mission-critical deployments that are highly visible within the enterprise, and they’re indicative of a growing trend.
