A polished performance

What is the secret to managing employees who just aren’t up to the job? Kate Russell explains

Ian, the FD at an automotive company, worked with Janice, the accounts manager. Despite a number of chats and guidance from Ian, she was struggling; employee attendance was poor, invoices were slow to go out, credit control was always behind. Janice tried (unsuccessfully) to address the deficiencies herself and became tired and stressed. Ian decided that Janice was such a nice person and trying so hard that he felt it would be unkind to discipline her. She would be upset by it.
