SDLT: Anonymity not avoidance

First the government targeted higher rate SDLT avoidance, now it wants to stamp out intricate property enveloping, says Jaimie Kaffash

With all the controversy over the cut in the 50p tax rate, the charity tax and the pasty tax, it might be forgotten that much of the run-up to this year’s Budget focused on the avoidance of stamp duty land tax. A drip-feed of stories suggested that high net worth individuals were avoiding the charge by ‘enveloping’ their properties – using companies to buy expensive residential properties.
