The leafy Surrey suburbs of Esher and Walton are home to the highest taxpayers in the country, according to research by UHY Hacker Young, which showed that nearly nine in ten top paying UK-based taxpayers live in the leafy ‘stockbroker belt’ around London
The top spot for higher rate taxpayers is the Surrey area of Elmbridge, which encompasses Esher and Walton, and is home to some of the country’s top sports personalities and TV and music celebrities.
Here the average income tax payment hit £17,800 in the 2013-14 tax year, up 5% from £16,900 in a single year. The average income in the tax hotspots has hit £64,500, up 8% from £59,600 in 2012/13 and over double the UK average.
By contrast, the average UK taxpayer shells out £4,820 on income tax a year, excluding national insurance contributions, and earns an average £29,600.
UHY Hacker Young says Elmbridge has become a hub for the UK’s high net worth individuals and sporting and entertainment stars. Dubbed the ‘Beverley Hills of Britain’, it has been home to a number of high profile celebrities including Elton John, Sir Cliff Richard, ex Chelsea star Frank Lampard and world tennis number two Andy Murray who has racked up $43m in prize money over his career. It is also a big draw for wealthy Russian exiles.

Mark Giddens, head of private client services at UHY Hacker Young, says: ‘Elmbridge is a sought after residential area for high earning celebrities and city brokers. With a number of huge properties with large private grounds, it is a hotspot for wealthy city workers wanting to escape London.’
