Top 75 firms survey 2016: merger frenzy

Accountancy’s annual Top 75 UK firms survey indicates an acquisitive mood among ambitious mid-tier firms and shifts among the Big Four rankings for the first time in years as annual fee income hits £12.8bn, and EY eclipses KPMG in the rankings. Philip Smith reports

Delivering a 7% boost in fee income over the last 12 months, the top 75 accounting firms in the UK are benefiting from a healthy economic climate in the UK, despite growing uncertainty facing British businesses in the coming year. At £12.8bn, the UK’s top firms increased fee earnings by more than £800m over last year’s survey, with very few firms showing a decrease in turnover.

At the very top of the league table, the Big Four collectively pulled in more than £9.7bn in fees, outstripping last year’s figure of £9.1bn by nearly 7%. But within this group, there were two major developments. The first was that PwC, the UK’s largest firm, broke through the £3bn barrier for the first time after it saw its income rise by 9.6% to reach £3.083bn.
