David Tuckett is director of the University College London (UCL) Centre for the Study of Decision-Making under Uncertainty and a senior research fellow at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany. Trained in Economics, Medical Sociology and Psychoanalysis he was awarded a Leverhulme Research fellowship to develop the theory of emotional finance resulting in a widely acclaimed book, Minding the Markets: An Emotional Finance View of Financial Instability. Since 2010, supported by the Institute of New Economic Thinking, he has been collaborating with colleagues at UCL in economics, finance, psychology, social anthropology, computer science and neuroscience and with the Financial Stability and Research Divisions at the Bank of England to develop a new approach to modelling the micro foundations of economic behaviour under uncertainty - Conviction narrative theory (CNT). Operationalised to track sentiment shifts in digital text, CNT is proving useful as a new method to forecast the economy and to detect signs of emerging but hitherto unrecognised risk inside and outside organisations.
