Seen by many as an attempt to shore up his position as leader of both the UK and the Labour Party, the prime minister has appointed Labour heavyweight and former chancellor Gordon Brown as ‘special reviewer on global finance and cooperation’.

This appointment follows historic losses in elections across England, Wales, and Scotland, where in England alone Labour lost 1,496 councillors in one night.
