HMRC launches API strategy to improve tax software development

In an attempt to improve the quality of tax software and improve tax compliance levels, HMRC has published a third-party tax software and application programme interface (API) strategy outlining how it plans to work more closely with developers to create innovative tax programmes

The department plans to work more closely with software developers to enable them to bring new and more sophisticated products to the market. HMRC said that ‘one of the key ways we will do this is by releasing APIs with richer capabilities. These will allow developers to do much more, and encourage innovation’.

The move is designed to improve rates of compliance, minimise costs for HMRC and improve the customer experience. It comes on the back of a number of complaints about HMRC’s own gov.uk processing services, which experienced a number of downtime incidents over the summer.
