Revenue & Customs is establishing a specialist unit to manage the tax matter of the rich as it continues to crack down on tax evasion. Although the remit of the new unit will concentrate primarily on non-domiciles and multimillionaires and ensure that all income is declared on their tax return, other high net worth individuals with complicated tax issues may also be supervised, The Times reports. The Revenue aims to collect an additional £7bn in tax over the next three years, as the government attempts to fill the gap in tax revenues because of the economic downturn. Accounting group UHY Hacker Young, recently found that the Revenue collected 13% more tax from compliance work in 2007-08 than in the previous tax year, and that extra tax from tax inquiries and interventions rose from £11.4bn to £12.9bn. The Revenue said: 'The new high-net-worth unit will ensure an integrated and consistent approach to this customer group. All customers and agents affected by this restructuring will be contacted directly to let them know about the new arrangements.'
