The Treasury has confirmed that Dan Tomlinson, MP for Chipping Barnet will take over as chair of the board at HMRC, as well as Murray’s previous role as Exchequer secretary to the Treasury, effectively making the chair of the tax authority a political, not independent, appointment.

A Treasury spokesperson said: ‘The new chair of the HMRC board will be Dan Tomlinson, the Exchequer secretary to the Treasury.’

When Murray took over as chair of HMRC, shortly after Labour won the election, he informed the Treasury Committee that it was an unpaid position on top of his other roles, and it is thought Tomlinson will take on the role under the same setting.
