Accountants are calling for the main political parties to have greater clarity in their tax policies, in a bid to establish if tax increases are going to occur. A report published by BDO Stoy Hayward entitled Time to break the silence, addresses decisions that need to be made about the government's current £175bn deficit. It says there is currently not enough debate about key taxation policies that will affect UK business coming from the three main political parties - Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats - surrounding the need to fill a £25bn hole in government coffers. Stephen Herring, a senior partner with the firm, said the scale of the issue meant 'it is simply unacceptable that the public should be expected to await an inevitably febrile three week election campaign; this is not sufficient time for reasoned debate on tax strategy. 'We call for all three parties to share their projected tax policies now so that businesses, individual taxpayers and the consumer can become part of the debate. Tax increases are seldom welcome but some increases are much worse than others,' he added.
