The integrated reporting group, IIRC, is to publish a statement calling for governments and regulators to endorse plans for a new reporting framework, as over 80 multinational companies have completed year one of an integrated reporting (IR) pilot programme.
Speaking at the organisation's annual conference in Amsterdam, IIRC CEO Paul Druckman said: 'The statement will outline the broad benefits of our market-led approach and will call on governments, regulators and standard setters to sit up and take notice of our movement. We need to encourage them to think about, and prepare for, integrated reporting, in advance of the framework being published at the end of next year. '
The IIRC has also announced plans to extend the one-year pilot programme for two further reporting cycles, as a result of ongoing technical implementation problems.
Addressing some of the implementation problems raised by pilot users, Druckman said: 'My second insight concerns the challenges you have raised. Many of these are technical and relate to the concepts that underpin IR. In the latter part of this year and early 2013, we will be releasing a series of technical papers which will further flesh out these critical definitions and concepts. While this conference doesn't mirror our technical activities, we will be using the discussions to inform our thinking.
'The framework will be so much more valuable with the benefit of this extensive testing. While we believe IR will have broad benefits for business, the economy and society, our focus is on institutional investors, particularly long-term investors, as the primary audience of
'Investors want information that is value relevant, industry-specific, and that provides an indication that the business is on the right future path - not just that it has performed well in the past. This is not to ignore the financials; but rather IR makes the financial statements more meaningful by placing them in the broader context both of the business strategy and the other factors - resources and resource constraints - that businesses operate within.'
